How to Transcribe Google Meet Automatically (With Summaries)
Published: October 12, 2026
Google Meet shows live captions on screen, but those captions are not saved as clean notes. Once the meeting ends, you still have to reconstruct who said what — let alone write a summary and follow-up list. Fortunately, Google Meet transcripts can be produced automatically, complete with summaries.
Does Google Meet transcribe automatically?
Google Meet does have a transcript feature, but it is generally available only on certain Google Workspace plans and must be turned on by the host. The live captions during a meeting are also temporary — they are not automatically saved as minutes. So for consistent results across any account (including a regular Gmail account) plus summaries and action items, you need a helper tool.
Option 1: Record via Google Meet, then process
If you have recording access in Workspace, record the meeting, then download the file from Google Drive. After that, upload it to Notulify to get the transcript, speaker labels, summary, and action items automatically.
Option 2: Record straight from the browser (no Workspace needed)
This works on any account. Notulify has a "Record an online meeting" mode that captures the Google Meet tab audio (other participants) mixed with your microphone — turned into a transcript and summary as soon as you finish.
Steps:
- Open Notulify in desktop Chrome or Edge, then choose "Record an online meeting".
- When the dialog appears, pick the Google Meet tab and tick "Share tab audio".
- Use headphones so participant audio does not bleed back into your mic (avoiding echo).
- End the meeting → press stop → transcript + summary + action items are processed automatically.
Tips for the best results
- Use headphones; this matters most for online-meeting transcript quality.
- Give the meeting a clear title so it is easy to find.
- Rename Person 1/Person 2 with real names after processing.
- Share the summary as a read-only link with people who missed it.
What about Zoom?
The same approach works: record system/app audio and process it with Notulify, or upload an existing Zoom recording. One consistent flow for every meeting platform.
